Rock While You Vote! The Summit Performs for Early Voters at NSU

Early voters can cast their ballots at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library and enjoy FREE live music on October 30, 2020. The live concert will be provided by The Summit (@thesummit954) at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.

Members of The Summit (Lenny Arias, Anthony Bucci, Farid Cano, and Timothy LaRoque) have risen the ranks of South Florida’s music scene, performing at well-known venues like the American Airlines Arena and Revolution Live all before the age of 21. What started out as a hobby for these South Broward High School band students in 2018, has quickly blossomed into a special experience for both the band and all who listen to them. The group channels a wide range of classical influences in their musicianship, including Elton John and The Beatles.

FCE&SCJ Participates in The Florida Distance Learning Association and The Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

The Florida Distance Learning Association (FDLA) and The Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (FAMTE) welcome K-20 Educators and stakeholders to its Virtual Conference 2020, which took place on September 30 through October 2. Hui Fang Huang “Angie” Su, Professor at NSU’s Fischler Education & School of Criminal Justice Education is the Conference and Program Chair.

The conference committee put together a great program with ideas and strategies for virtually educating K-20 students during the pandemic.  The program is to inform participants of the latest developments in Distance Learning and academic content-related topics in Florida to narrow the gap between K-12 and Higher Education.   Many Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice (FCE&SCJ) faculty and staff members, and colleagues from other colleges within NSU presented at the conference.  The presentations were informative and relevant, especially during this time.  The colleagues diligently prepared highly informative presentations with the latest on educational tools, technologies, and services.  Their dedication to distance education, while not surprising, is appreciated.  FCE&SCJ is a grateful to the conference committee and the moderators for their time and tireless efforts to help make this conference a success.

Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine Faculty Publishes in PLOS ONE

Co-authors Vladimir Beljanksi, Ph.D. from the College of Allopathic Medicine and NSU’s Cell Therapy Institute, with Adil Duru, Ph.D.

Vladimir Beljanksi, Ph.D. from the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine and NSU’s Cell Therapy Institute, along with his team and co-investigator Adil Duru, Ph.D. and his team, published a manuscript in the journal PLOS ONE. In this study, they utilized cardiac progenitor cells to show that such cells can be infected with Zika virus (ZIKV) which caused cell death. Most of previous studies have focused on neuronal progenitor cells due to ZIKV-induced abnormal functions of neuronal cells causing neurological disorders such as microcephaly in the newborns and Guillain–Barré syndrome in the adults. However, lesser known effects of ZIKV infection also include issues with cardiac tissues in infected individuals. The Duru/Beljanski teams exposed the cells to various amounts of ZIKV and followed viral replication over time. They then utilized systems biology approaches to examine mechanistic aspects of ZIKV infection which allowed them to determine potential therapeutic approaches that can be used prophylactically to prevent or decrease ZIKV infection of such cells. This project was funded by the Zika Research Grant Initiative, Florida Department of Health.
