CAHSS Faculty is Guest Presenter for Global Ties Miami

Ransford Edwards, Ph.D.

Ransford Edwards, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) was a guest speaker for Global Ties Miami Tuesday Talks. His talk was entitled, “Disaster Capitalism in Latin America: Spotlight on Venezuela.”

Edwards’ regional areas of focus are the Caribbean and Latin America. His work appears in Class, Race, and Corporate Power and he has been a reviewer for the journal Disasters. His teaching interests include quantitative research methods, political economy, and political film and fiction. He is the faculty advisor for NSU’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, National Political Science Honor Society.

Halmos Dean Honors Black History Month in Broward County

On Thursday, February 13, Black History Month was celebrated with the Broward Black Elected Officials (BBEO). Attending was Halmos College Dean Richard Dodge, Ph.D. The title of the event was “Forward Together Uniting the Diaspora”. This community event featured special presentations by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Congressman Alcee L. Hastings.

BBEO is a not-for-profit organization created to galvanize Broward County’s black elected officials around socio-economic issues affecting those most impoverished in our community. Past-President Levoyd Williams and the team of elected officials at the time the organization was established, saw the need for a countywide collaborative effort as an effective strategy for leveraging solutions to help people living in underserved neighborhoods. Over the years, BBEO has continued its legacy of providing a wide range of resources to help the residents of Broward County.

Mathematics of Modern Medical Imaging Discussed in Seminar

Last week, Halmos faculty member Vehbi Paksoy, Ph.D. presented a talk entitled, “Tensor Eigenvalue Problems and Modern Medical Imaging”. This talk, part of the Mathematics Colloquium Series hosted by the Halmos College Department of Mathematics discussed Tensors (or hypermatrices) are multidimensional generalization of matrices. Although historically they are studied from the perspective of combinatorics and (hyper)graph theory, recent progress in the subject shows how useful they are in more applied sciences such as physics and medicine.

In this presentation, he introduced a few tensor eigenvalue problems and their application to higher order diffusion tensor imaging such as diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and higher angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI).

Parasitology Club Shares the Love on Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day, the NSU Parasitology Club held an educational event outside of the Parker Building. There they showcased parasites that reflected the day’s theme: schistosomes that mate for life, head and pubic lice that are spread by close contact, Trichomonas which is a major STD among college aged people, and a display of live Entamoeba gingivalis (a harmless mouth microbe) which is spread by kissing.

The parasitology club’s advisor is Halmos faculty member Chris Blanar, Ph.D.

 

NSU To Honor Holocaust Reflection Contest Winners, March 14

There’s an old saying: “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” George Santayana

Nothing could ring truer, especially when it comes to the Holocaust. That’s why the Holocaust Reflection Contest is so important – it gets today’s generation involved in learning about, remembering and honoring the 6 million Jews and the millions of others who died. More than 1,400 students across Florida at the middle and high school level submitted artwork, poetry and film creations.

This year we expect 10 Holocaust survivors to be on hand – the most in the history of the contest – who will interact and share their experiences with students and attendees. In addition, NSU is very pleased to welcome the Consuls General from Israel and Germany to the event, which is scheduled for March 14 from 10 a.m. – noon.

NSU’s Reading Education program ranked #1 in the state by Florida Department of Education

NSU’s Reading program, a major in the M.S. in Education at the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education & School of Criminal Justice, is ranked #1 out of 307 institutions offering teacher preparation programs in the state by the Florida Department of Education (DOE).  Further, the program was ranked the #1 English and Reading Program in the state. Based on the January 2020 Florida DOE report, factors considered in the ranking are teacher placement rate, retention rate, student performance on statewide assessments, statewide performance by groups, and teacher evaluations.  The Reading Program earned a score of 3.8 out of 4.0 placing it higher than all 307 Florida institutions.

Annual Oral Cancer Awareness 5K, March 29

The Annual Oral Cancer Awareness 5K is organized by NSU Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and OMFS Department on Sunday, March 29 at the Alvin Sherman Library Quad.

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness within the community. Funds raised will go towards helping a designated patient from the NSU Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Department. Last year we raised approximately $10,000 for a noble cause and an amazing and remarkable young woman.
