2nd Annual Society for NeuroSports Conference

NSU College of Psychology will sponsor the 2nd Annual Society for NeuroSports Conference on March 26-27 in Deerfield Beach, FL. The conference will include speakers from NSU and other universities around the country. This year we welcome NSU graduate and former NFL athlete, Julius Thomas as the events virtual event host.

Wendy Suzuki, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker. Suzuki is a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the New York University Center for Neural Science and prominent science communicator. Her talk is entitled “The Astonishing Effects of Exercise on Your Brain!”

Session topics will include:

  • The Role of Breathing in Performance, Pain, and the Nervous System.
  • Evolutionary Biology and Performance.
  • Sports Supplements – Good for the Noggin.
  • Exercise and Neuroplasticity.
  • The role of Sleep in Recovery and Performance
  • Mind-Body Approaches to Exercise.
  • Cognition and Mental Skills Training
  • Brian Injury and Recovery in Contact Sports.
  • The Application of Sports Neuroscience

The Society for NeuroSports is an academic society run by three NSU faculty- Jaime Tartar, Ph.D. from The College of Psychology along with Corey Peacock Ph.D., and Jose Antonio Ph.D. from the College of Health Care Sciences.

The society and conference is dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration in the fields of exercise science and neuroscience. This society is the first of its kind in the field of Sports Neuroscience. It is a society for passionate scientists and practitioners with an interest in furthering research-based athletic performance and brain health. It is our hope that the interdisciplinary discussions taking place in this society will increase the effectiveness and potential to reach greater levels of performance.

In honor of Black History Month, the Multicultural Affairs Student Development Committee is hosting the Black Men in Healthcare Panel on Feb.25 at 6:00 p.m.

2021 Art + Design Senior Exhibition Features Work of Senior Students in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts

The 2021 Art + Design Senior Exhibition opens with a virtual reception on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m. and features the work of senior B.A. Art + Design students within the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts in the Hamos College of Arts and Sciences.

The exhibit, titled “EMANON,” features a range of designs from five female artists – Gianna Allison, Amanda Glaser, Dyane Oliva, Sol Santecchia and Juliana Speranza – who share a story of five names brought together under one title. Their work is available for viewing through April 16 in Gallery 217, which is located on the second floor of the Don Taft University Center in the Performing and Visual Arts wing.

Both the virtual reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

Registration for the 2021 NSU Lunch & Learn Grant Workshops is now open! This year, all workshops will be attended remotely via Zoom and held on sequential Wednesdays 12:00-1:00pm. Registration is required to receive the event Zoom link.

Join Us for Your 2021 Town Hall Meetings, April 23

With the maelstrom of 2020 behind us, we are ready to look forward to a new year and new beginnings.

Each year, President Hanbury takes time to provide you with university updates and, more importantly, to hear from you about what is going well and how we can improve.

The 2021 Employee Town Halls will look a little different with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year, they all will be held via Zoom to keep everyone as safe as possible, while still providing you with an opportunity to engage with President Hanbury about NSU’s present and future.

Questions and comments can be submitted in advance or asked live during the meeting. You can find dates and times and submit a question in advance by clicking here.

Registration is Now Open for Breaking Barriers: A New Psychoeducational Group Program

The NSU Student Care Team has updated the Breaking Barriers: Group Psychoeducational Program schedule. The program aims to help students learn skills to better manage their lives. This series of virtual group sessions focus on a variety of topics.

Each group is held for a 4-week period, meeting only 1 hour each week. Students can register for one group each period and each group will have up to 12 students.  Interested in more than one group? Don’t you worry; once you have completed one, you can sign up for another!

Groups are held at various dates and times so you will be sure to find one that fits perfectly into your schedule.

  • 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. You’ve Got a Friend in Me: The basics of healthy relationships that can be generalized to all relationships in your life.

    Healthy Connections:
    Students will learn tips and strategies to initiate and maintain healthy relationships.

    Wellness Wednesday:
    Throughout the next few weeks you will learn a research-based model of wellness as well as how to apply and integrate self-care practices into your daily life.

    Recharge Your Rest Routine:
    We’ll be talking about sleep hygiene and how that plays a role in falling asleep and staying asleep. We will also be talking about the impact of sleep in your day-to-day life.

    The Rose That Grew from Concrete:
    Learn how to work through difficult circumstances and come out even stronger than before.

    Love Don’t Cost a Thing:
    The purpose of this group is to provide students the tools needed to initiate and maintain healthy relationships, whether it be professional, peer, family, or romantic relationships.

    A skill building group that will help you find your study prime through organizational strategies as well as tips and tricks to optimize your time management.

    This group session focuses on helping students understand the importance of knowing their individual responses to stress and provides tools to become more effective in managing it.

    A Moment to Myself:
    This group offers a new mindfulness/relaxation experience each week followed by open discussions.
