NSU to Host Local High School Students for Communication & Entrepreneurship Program

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream!

During National Ice Cream Month this July, local high school students will have the opportunity to make their own ice cream recipe and marketing plan at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). The Department of Writing and Communication at NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is offering a FREE weeklong Ice Cream Entrepreneur Program. The program will run daily from 9 a.m. – noon July 16 to 20 for high school students with an interest in communications, advertising, business, branding and public relations.

Student teams will spend four days of the week learning how to create and launch a new ice cream flavor in partnership with Yo Mama’s Ice Cream shop of Fort Lauderdale. The program will be held at NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus and on-site at the ice cream shop (901 Sunrise Lane, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304). On the final day, students will deliver an oral presentation at NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus pitching their ice cream flavor and marketing plan to a panel of judges. The winning flavor will have the opportunity to be produced locally by the shop.

CAHSS created the program as a community-led experiential learning opportunity for high school students interested in the field of communications.

“Following the success of last year’s program, we are excited to bring back the Ice Cream Entrepreneurship experience and to teach a new group of students,” said Stephen Andon, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Writing and Communication from NSU’s CAHSS. “Our goal is to help these highschoolers harness their creative abilities to develop a business plan and exercise their writing and presentation skills.”

Students enrolled in the program will:

  • Receive a certificate upon completion
  • Work with NSU professors and business professionals to develop their product
  • Advance their creative skills in advertising, branding, and oral presentations
  • Practice experiential learning and critical thinking in a college setting

The Who’s Tommy will run Friday Oct. 19, 2018 & Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 at 8pm in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.

Presented by Boca Black Box and based on the iconic 1969 rock concept album, The Who’s Tommy is an exhilarating story of hope, healing and the human spirit. The story of the pinball-playing, deaf, dumb and blind boy who triumphs over his adversities has inspired, amazed and puzzled audiences for more than 40 years. This five-time Tony Award-winning musical was translated to the stage by theatrical wizard, Des McAnuff, into a high-energy, one-of-a-kind theatrical event.

After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother’s lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia and, as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he’s discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball and, when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he becomes an international pinball superstar.

NSU 2018 Convocation, Aug. 17

Join us as we welcome the incoming class of undergraduate students to Nova Southeastern University on Friday, August 17, 2018 in the Rick Case Arena of the Don Taft University Center. The ceremony is scheduled to begin promptly at 9:00 am and end at approximately 10:30 am. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m., and participants and guests are asked to arrive no later than 8:30 a.m.

Convocation marks the beginning of the academic year by welcoming the newest members to our community of scholars. NSU Entrepreneurial Boot Camp, Starts Aug. 9

In Collaboration with the Shepard Broad College of Law, H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, and the College of Engineering and Computing, the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic will offer the first annual Entrepreneurial Boot Camp.

The program is designed to immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and disciplines needed to successfully launch a start-up business, with particular focus on those companies built on research, design, or innovation.

The program will include both an online component and a three-day workshop, Aug. 9-12 is open to all NSU students, faculty, staff, and to the general public. Topics will explore many of the essential steps for developing new products and companies, such as:

-Ideation and Research
-Business Planning
-Financial Planning and Market Analysis
-Patents and Patentability
-Non-patent based Intellectual Property
-Differentiated Products, Commodities, and Research Re-Assessment (e.g. Publish or Product)
-Business Legal Structures, Ownership Models, and Tax Implications
-Design, Fabrication, Production, and Delivery
-Business Funding and Finance: Angels, VCs, and Lenders
-Risk and Process Management

NSU College of Dental Medicine to Host Annual “Gives Kids a Smile” Event

Gives Kids a Smile.

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) College of Dental Medicine will offer dental screenings, examinations and treatments to children ages two to 21, including special needs patients, on Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NSU has joined forces with the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation in providing the Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) program at the university’s main campus, 3200 S. University Drive, since 2003. Students from the College of Pharmacy, the College of Optometry and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine also will be on hand to provide additional health advice.

Attendees will enjoy a festive, jungle-theme atmosphere with Disney characters, face painters, live DJ music and a special appearance by “Timmy the Tooth.” GKAS is open to the public by appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Unlike many other universities, NSU’s Give Kids a Smile program is student led and organized  and includes monthly oral health education visits at different local schools. NSU faculty members donate their time to this community service event and supervise dental students in this worthwhile project. Sponsors include Henry Schein Inc, Colgate, American Student Dental Association, and NSU College of Dental Medicine’s Student Government Association.

 WHY:

To provide education, screenings, preventive, and restorative services for South Florida children, and to create awareness about the access to dental care issue that exists in the United States. This is particularly significant given that the U.S. Surgeon General reports that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. The Pew Children’s Dental Campaign describes dental care as “the single greatest unmet need for health services among children” in its latest report.
