Sharks Women’s Basketball Volunteers with Boys and Girls Club

NSU women’s basketball team took time out of their Saturday to spend time at Kidsfest, a Rick Case Automotive Group back-to-school drive in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.

Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry spoke to the audience about the importance of goals and had volunteers come up on stage to join the student-athletes and share their career aspirations. Additionally, senior student-athlete, Esabelle Levine, brought a handful of children to play “Simon says” with basketballs.

“Before the event I was most excited about being able to inspire the boys and girls club kids to reach their goals, but after meeting them and hearing their aspirations I definitely left feeling inspired by them instead!” boasted Levine. “Having the opportunity to share our advice and time with them is something that I’ll value forever.”

The Rick Case Drive for Supplies Kidsfest was the Grand Finale of a two-week supply drive, which concluded with the donation of over 1,000 backpacks and school supplies to the kids of the Boy and Girls Club of Broward County.

NSU Receives $3.5 Million Grant to fund a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program

It’s a fact – the United States population is aging, and in a big way. According to U.S. Census data, the nation’s population age 65 and older is expected to nearly double over the next three decades, jumping from 48 million to 88 million by 2050. With that in mind, it’s clear that providing for the health care needs of older adults is going to play a prominent role in the nation’s future. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is proud to announce that its Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine has received a $3.5 million federal grant to fund a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP.) This project will create a collaborative model where “whole-person geriatric care” training is provided to those who will be on the front-lines working with older adults.

Dental Missions Treats over 1,000 Patients Abroad

While the summer season may call for time off from classes, labs and the daily view of teeth, members of the dental mission’s organization at the College of Dental Medicine spent the months of May and June providing oral care in underserved areas of the Caribbean.

The first trip of the year took place in May in the Dominican Republic where the elementary school, Ramon Matias Mella in Santo Domingo served as the practice location for our students and faculty. Check-ups, cleanings and extractions were led by our faculty with our students taking part under supervision.

For nearly a week our faculty and students were split into teams as they not only provided oral care but instructed the community on proper oral hygiene practices for long term health. Though the days were long and full of many responsibilities, students enjoyed not only providing care but seeing the beauty of the island. From interacting with the locals in and out of the practice to spending time at the beautiful Boca Chica beach the experience was one to remember as it concluded with CDM being able to provide care for over 531 patients, an experience that second year student Laura Suris will always be remembered.

“One of the best decisions was to go on this mission trip to the DR! We had an incredible group of passionate and dedicated professors and soon to be dentists! Thank you to the incredible people of the DR that trusted us and put in our hands their oral health care needs,” wrote Suris.

In the same way, the June mission trip to Jamaica was full of hard work, challenges and a chance for our students to get hands-on experiences. Our dental teams spent the week in Ocho Rios, Kingston and in local and historic places such as Saint Mary Parish in Port Maria.

While several students have previously been to the island on previous trips, second year dental student Darren Morgan has a special connection with the island as it has been a decade since last seeing his family in Jamaica. Morgan took to heart the chance to not only reunite with his grandmother and aunt but to have them see him in action performing dental work.

“I am beyond humbled by my time in Jamaica on our 10-day Mission Trip. In total, we treated 665 dental patients, including my grandmother and aunt. It had been over 10 years since I had last seen them. Having them see me in action was emotional on so many different levels. I am grateful to all who helped make this mission trip possible. Giving back to the country that my family calls home was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life thus far,” said Morgan.

CDM aims to continue its active tradition in participating in its yearly mission trips. Fundraisers, donations and our dedicated students and faculty continue to provide us with the tools and resources to give back in the best way possible, providing healthy smiles for those in need.

NSU Model United Nation Team Competed at Regional Conference

From March 28-30, NSU’s Model UN team competed at the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference in Charlotte.

“It’s one of the biggest regional conferences,” said Assistant Professor G. Nelson Bass, Ph.D./J.D., of the Department of History and Political Science in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

The eight members of the NSU team included Celina Mahabir, Genesis Alvarez, Varsha Gopaulchan, Kayre Alcantara Martinez, Emily Gilman, Melanie Nguyen, Janay Joseph, and Jasmine Knight. Each team was assigned to represent a country in the UN General Assembly, with the NSU team dividing in two to represent the Russian Federation and the Czech Republic. The teams are assigned issues and must submit position papers on those issues in advance of the conference. The topics for the General Assembly Plenary included the “Challenges of Eliminating Forced Labor” and “Improving Access to Quality Healthcare for Children.”

Bass said a team’s success was judged by the quality of their position papers, as well as making speeches and passing resolutions on the issues while staying “in character” for their assigned country, which can be difficult depending on the topic.

“Some countries use a lot of forced labor, so it’s not approaching it from what’s the right thing to do, but what would this country do,” he said.

The students researched government speeches to understand the language of Russian diplomacy. The NSU team also had a large role to play since Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and has veto power over resolutions. Multiple resolutions were passed by the end of the conference, and students were scored on their performance and received awards. The NSU team received three awards total, including a distinguished delegation award for Russia, and individual awards for most outstanding delegate and most improved delegate.
