NSU MD 5K Dash For Diversity Set for Sept. 24

The 3rd NSU MD 5K Dash for Diversity will be taking place in person on Saturday, September 24th, 2022.

Meet us at the NSU Gold Circle Lake at 7:30 a.m. (3300 S. University Drive, Fort-Lauderdale-Davie, Florida 33314) to Dash for Diversity. Everyone is welcome to participate!!!!!

Awards will be given to the top three female, male, and non-binary finishers in the student and non-student categories. Amazon gift cards will be awarded in the amount of $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $30 for third place. Refreshments will be provided.

Halmos to Host Sustainable Development Goals Launch Sept. 23

The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS) is pleased to host the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Launch on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is open to all NSU students.

The SDG Launch is an educational program with skills development training designed in collaboration with the Foundation for Environmental Stewardship (FES) on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to teach how students can take action to support community initiatives for sustainable development.

Health Care Sciences Offers Special Zoom Sessions

The Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences’ Departments of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology will be holding Fall 2022 online Zoom sessions on “Hearing Loss Strategies for Success.”

DATE: September 15 to October 27

TIME: Thursdays, 2:15 – 3:30 p.m.

Each meetings include short informational sessions, strategies on dealing with hearing loss, improving communication skills and speechreading tips. You may participate in one or more sessions.

Halmos Faculty Member Chairs Marine Mammal Conference, Aug. 1-5

Amy Hirons, Ph.D.

Amy Hirons, Ph.D., a professor at Nova Southeastern University, is the chair for the upcoming Society for Marine Mammalogy’s 24th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals. The conference will be held Aug. 1-5 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach.

More than 1,800 participants from 75 countries will be attending the society’s first hybrid conference, which will be in person and streaming virtual. Scientific knowledge will be shared related to marine mammal conservation and environmental change.

Hirons is an oceanographer and professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, which is one of the sponsors for the conference. Halmos College collaborators for the event include Dimitrios Giarikos, Chemistry; and David Kerstetter, Marine and Environmental Sciences.

Among the speakers will be world renowned marine scientist Sylvia Earle.

Crossing Borders Exhibit Takes You Around the World June 16 -Aug. 11

Join the Alvin Sherman Library in collaboration with the Khawam Gallery to celebrate the opening of Crossing Borders: Artists from the Middle East & the Americas, an exhibit of art and personal stories of the cultural heritage of immigrant artists from Turkey, Israel, Syria, the UK, Cuba, Haiti, Columbia, and Venezuela. At the reception, you’ll experience “A Taste of the Middle East, and Latin America,” and engage in a facilitated dialogue focusing on building cultural understanding, dispelling stereotypes, and fostering awareness of immigrants from the Middle East, the Americas and beyond with stories of their history in the U.S. This will be shared through videos, photos, and text as it contributes to the American fabric.

Thursday, June 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Cotilla Gallery on the second floor. Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
