A Once-in a Lifetime Opportunity for Two Pharm.D. Students

On the first day the COVID-19 vaccine became available, December 14, 2020,  two third-year students, Ashley Dabalsa (’22) and Laura Perez-Gutierrez (’22) had an experience of a lifetime – they were involved in reconstituting for administration the COVID-19 vaccine at Memorial Healthcare System (MHS), which was the first institution that started providing the vaccines in South Florida.

Here is what Ashley and Laura say about the experience:
Ashley Dabalsa Pharmacy Intern, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at MHS
“Today was one of the biggest days of my life. I was the first person to reconstitute the vial and draw up the first syringes of the COVID-19 vaccine in all of South Florida. Not only was I able to represent this amazing healthcare system that I work for, but I was able to represent …[the] College of Pharmacy … at Nova Southeastern University. Being able to be a pharmacy intern for Memorial Healthcare System gave me this opportunity of a lifetime.”
“Thanks to Dorinda Segovia (’92), I was able to have this life changing moment. God only knows how grateful and thankful I am to have such an amazing mentor as her in my life. I wouldn’t be half of the pharmacy intern that I am today if it weren’t for her guidance, advice, love and care that she gives me constantly. There is truly no one out there like her, she is truly one in a million. Thanks to her, all the executives in Memorial and our CEO Aurelio Fernandez we were 1 out of 5 hospitals in the state of Florida receiving this vaccine firsthand.”
Laura Perez-Gutierrez Pharmacy Intern MHS
“This morning was one for the books! I was fortunate enough to be one of only two students from Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy who were part of the compounding for administration of the COVID-19 vaccine at Memorial Healthcare System, which was the first institution that started providing the vaccines today in South Florida.
I can’t thank you enough Dorinda Segovia for all the guidance and effort you have put into guiding me through this journey. You are a huge part of my success as a professional!”

NSU College of Pharmacy Student Creates “Humans of PharmD” Instagram Account

Inspired by the “Humans of New York” photography project, Jeremy Espeut, a doctoral candidate in NSU’s College of Pharmacy, created a “Humans of PharmD” Instagram account. Just as Humans of New York aims to capture the images and stories of random people in New York, Humans of PharmD is a space where students in the College of Pharmacy can learn more about their peers. Students are asked to submit a photo and a bit of information about themselves.

“There are a lot of people in my program that I say hi to, without really knowing them or their story. This Instagram page will help bring our class together. It’s fun to discover interesting facets about people that you wouldn’t have known before,” said Espeut.

Humans of PharmD is currently run by Espeut, alongside Nourhan Nashed, Kathleen Jackson, and Bailey Bruns who are the class historians for the Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Puerto Rico campuses, respectively. Their goal is to highlight every student in their program. The account is updated every other day. “Everyone is important and everyone has a story. We’re going to uncover all of those stories,” said Espeut.

NSU’s College of Pharmacy-Palm Beach Hosts First-Ever Virtual Pinning and Awards Ceremony

The NSU College of Pharmacy-Palm Beach Campus hosted their Pinning and Awards Ceremony for the Class of 2021 via Zoom. This annual event celebrates the end of the students’ classroom study before they leave campus to enter a full year of experiential learning, also referred to as Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) or rotations. In attendance were students, their friends and families, as well as administration, faculty, and staff of the College.

Dean Michelle Clark, Ph.D., addressed the students, encouraging them to be a Shark while on APPEs and demonstrate what it means to have that “NSU edge”, while maintaining balance in their personal lives. Guest speaker, Victoria Scott, Pharm.D., clinical manager at Wellington Regional Medical Center, emphasized the importance of professionalism. She also reiterated the value in networking and the impact that involvement in professional organizations will have in advancing the role of the pharmacist. Others sharing their remarks were student leaders, Louis Schobel (’20) and Mahalia Sanon (’21).

The program ended with an Awards Ceremony that recognized students from the Class of 2021 for their academic achievements, determination, professionalism, and SharkSpirit, along with high performing leaders from sanctioned professional organizations of the College.

“Transitioning a major event like this into a virtual platform was not an easy undertaking, but the Pinning and Awards Ceremony is a pivotal achievement in pharmacy school and the students have earned the right to celebrate this milestone. Cancelling the event was not an option.” said Rochelle Nappi, Ed.D., the assistant dean of the college in the Palm Beach.

NSU College of Pharmacy Alumnus Named Walgreens President

Richard Ashworth, Pharm.D.

Walgreens Boots Alliance recently named NSU College of Pharmacy alumnus, Richard Ashworth, Pharm.D. (’99), President of Walgreens. Ashworth, who started at NSU when it was still known as Southeastern University, credits his ability to work his way up the ranks of Walgreens from stock boy to now President, partly to his time at NSU.

In a 2015 “SharksRx” Magazine interview, the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recipient said, “Pharmacy is all about helping patients achieve improved health and well-being.”  He continued, “So it can’t be about tablets in a bottle…that’s not what pharmacy is about.”  He concludes, “Pharmacy is about making a difference in people’s lives.”

Dean Clark said, “I am extremely proud of Dr. Ashworth for this accomplishment.  It is exciting to see our Sharks dominate in the profession of pharmacy, taking on the leadership roles we envision for our students.”

Congratulations and thank you for being a shining example of what can be accomplished with the foundation laid by the NSU Edge and dedication to the profession of pharmacy, Richard!
