Professor Rachel Panton Publishes Essay in Edited Collection

Rachel Panton, Ph.D.

According to Rachel Panton, Ph.D., in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts, the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped our lives, and especially, the ways we approach writing education with care. Panton’s recently published essay for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) titled “You Good, Fam’?: Mindful Journaling and Africana Digital Dialogic Compassionate Rhetorical Response Pedagogy during a Pandemic,” brings together her background in Africana womanism with practices of journaling and self-reflection to document the importance of mindfulness in facilitating writing instruction in uncertain times. The essay details Panton’s experiences connecting with her students in new ways during the pandemic by focusing even more on their wellbeing and writing process rather than on the products of their writing alone.

“This article brings to mind all of the emotions that were present during the initial journaling experience, as well as thoughts of how times have changed and yet remain the same. I still get misty-eyed when I think about my Spring semester 2020 students. I still think of them often and fondly, and I wonder if they pulled through mentally, physically, and spiritually whole. What we experienced together changed me personally and professionally, and the opportunity to reflect on that journey as a Documentarian for 4Cs allowed me to deepen my Africana womanist pedagogical practices for future students. For this, I am forever grateful,” said Panton.

Halmos Faculty Host AAUW-PACE Art + Design Workshop

On February 21, 2023, Professor Kandy Lopez-Moreno, Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts, and Professor Julie Garcia, Department of Biological Sciences, jointly facilitated a monotype workshop for the PACE Center for Girls of Broward County on behalf of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The workshop is part of the AAUW’s Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (E-STEAM) project hosted on NSU’s campus. During the workshop, participants learned printmaking and were introduced to careers in art and design.

“Dr. Garcia and I have been working together with the AAUW NSU chapter for 7 years. Through this program we collaborate with the PACE Center for Girls of Broward to provide hands on experience in the visual arts sphere. We’ve taught graphic design, print design, monotype prints, screen prints and letterpress. It’s also a way for us (science + art) to learn from each other and to work outside of our discipline,” said Professor Kandy Lopez-Moreno.

The AAUW is a national organization that has encouraged women to pursue higher education since 1881. Their mission is to advance gender equity through research, education and advocacy. The Fort Lauderdale branch, to which our faculty contribute, was chartered in 1947 and is one of 35 branches in the state of Florida.

Mako Media Students Are Journalists Awards Finalists

From left, Paulina Riojas, Bryce Johnson, and Santiago Diaz Finochietto.

Sponsored by the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts, NSU’s student-run TV station, Mako TV, was announced as one of two finalists in the TV Magazine section of the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists contest. The Men/Tal Stigma documentary illuminates the issues surrounding men’s mental health through interviews with specialists, students from Nova Southeastern University, and individuals affected by mental illness.

Santiago Diaz Finochietto, Director and Co-executive Producer of the documentary and senior international student at NSU, said that “when the team sat down to discuss the topic of the documentary, we figured that it was best to go for something that affected us all and was close to us, and going for men’s mental health turned out to be a great decision. I think it is time to break those barriers and assumptions imposed on us in the early years of our life.”

Mako TV started to work on this documentary in early December and submitted the final product by mid-January. “Although we had our ups and downs, we really enjoyed the process of making this documentary. We believe we did a great job, and hopefully, we not just win but have more to come,” said Paulina Riojas, Co-executive Producer.

Chris Delboni, Director of Mako Media, said that “I am extremely happy for the team. I think we have a great chance to win this contest, but despite the result, I am excited and grateful for what our students experience.”

On Saturday, April 22, 13 Mako Media staff will travel to Orlando for the awards ceremony at the Rosen Centre Resort.
