NSU’s College of Pharmacy Hosts: A Day for the Next Generation of Pharmacists

The College of Pharmacy-Palm Beach Campus hosted “A Day for the Next Generation of Pharmacists” event in May. This collaborative effort of pharmacy educators was designed to bring knowledge and understanding of the evolving pharmacy profession.  The event was geared to individuals seeking to gain insight into the pharmacy profession as they pursue their interests in becoming a pharmacist. Eighteen program participants from Florida, Georgia, and Texas attended the free event. The day included of mini lectures in core pharmacy pillars, as well as interactive activities focused on compounding, blood pressure monitoring, and simulated patient counseling.

“We are excited to increase the public’s knowledge about the impact pharmacists can have on their patients’ lives and to showcase our Palm Beach campus” said Rochelle Nappi, Ed.D., the assistant dean of the college in the Palm Beach.

Regional Nurses Attend Meeting on Addiction Intervention in Tampa

NSU’s Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing at the Tampa regional campus recently hosted a regional meeting of the Florida Nurses Association (FNA).

Linda Smith, a consultant for the Florida Intervention Project for Nurses (IPN) and the Florida Department of Health, spoke to nurses about how to recognize when healthcare professionals need treatment for drug use and addiction.

Smith also discussed efforts to rehabilitate rather than prosecute workers struggling with drug use, an idea that has gained favor with employers since IPN began. Participants learned how to recognize nurses who may need treatment and how to provide important resources.

Tampa Bay Regional Campus: Let’s Talk About It: Sexual Assault and the First Response, May 16

A sociodrama on effective responses and communication with sexual assault survivors

Join the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Tampa Bay Regional Campus on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. as we experience the emotional and mental state of a survivor while assessing the situation through the eyes of a first responder. Participants will engage in real-life scenarios and discuss relevant, effective interventions.

Attendees will:

  • Learn how to identify individual characteristics related to trauma
  • Obtain skills and techniques to use when interacting with survivors
  • Explore the prevalence, warning signs, and coping strategies for individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Discover best practice treatment approaches based on Judith Herman’s trauma-focused framework

NSU Jacksonville Campus: From Piracy to Terrorism: Understanding the Roots of U.S. National Security, May 18

What exactly do politicians and policy makers mean when they refer to national security? To justify major government expenditures or dramatic policy initiatives, they rarely say more than that it is in the interest of U.S. national security. David Kilroy, Ph.D., Nova Southeastern University will present a historical analysis of the root of the concept in the U.S. and explore how the parameters of U.S. national security have evolved through the history of the Republic. NSU Supports the Parkinson Association of Central Florida at the Walk for Parkinson

The Parkinson Association of Central Florida (PACF) Walk for Parkinson at Cranes Roost Park, Altamonte Springs, Florida on April 6th was a big success.

The Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences would like to give special thanks to our Orlando Regional Campus Parkinson Support Group Speech-Language Pathology graduate student clinicians and the SLP faculty, who organized the event and raised over $500 for PACF.

NSU Fort Myers Campus Students Raise Money for Relay for Life

On Saturday, April 6, 2019 staff and students from the Nova Southeastern University Fort Myers Campus participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and raised over $3,800! Throughout the entire day, they took turns walking around the track and raising money for the event at the NSU tent. A huge thank you goes out to all the students and staff who participated in the event, especially to the team captain, Payton Brosche, who organized the team, secured donations, and made sure things ran smoothly. The Fort Myers Campus is proud to have students who love to give back!

Tampa Bay Regional Campus to host School Violence Prevention: The Critical Role of Community and Mental Health Professionals

Join the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Tampa Bay Regional Campus on Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. for “School Violence Prevention: The Critical Role of Community and Mental Health Professionals”. The guest speaker will be professor Scott Poland, Ed.D. Alumni and friends reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with presentations to follow at 6:30 p.m.

It is essential that school and community personnel know the incidence of school violence and be up-to-date on the best safety and prevention practices. This presentation will review numerous state and national initiatives that have focused on school violence prevention and the recommendations from a variety of foundations started by parents who lost their child in tragic school shootings. Participants will learn many lessons from school tragedies and the critical roles for the community and mental health professionals in prevention as well as the major theory of murder-suicide.

With over 45 years of experience, Scott Poland, Ed.D., professor, codirector, Nova Southeastern University Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention offers a wealth of knowledge in responding to school shootings and is dedicated to prevention. He has testified about the mental health needs of children and school safety before the U.S. Congress and has personally assisted school communities after 16 shootings. Poland is also the former president of the National Association of School Psychologists.
