On Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson visited Nova Southeastern University’s Davie Campus to see firsthand how the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation network is powering innovation in South Florida’s space ecosystem.
WTVJ-TV anchor Jackie Nespral interviews NASA Administrator Bill Nelson for an upcoming story during his visit to NSU.
During the visit, Administrator Nelson met with NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II; John Wensveen, the Chief Innovation Officer at NSU and Executive Director of the Levan Center; Provost Ronald J. Chenail; Dr. Fred Lippman, NSU’s Chancellor of the Health Professions Division; and Ken Dawson-Scully, NSU’s Senior Vice President for the Division of Research and Economic Development. Administrator Nelson also spoke with and took questions from several NSU students.
During his talk, Nelson covered the vastness of space, its influence on his life, the possibility of life beyond our planet, and UFO sightings. He also did a sit-down interview with WTVJ-TV anchor Jackie Nespral.
Nelson was sworn in as the 14th NASA administrator on May 3, 2021, and has been tasked with carrying out the vision for NASA to demonstrate American leadership in air, space, and on Earth for the benefit of all humanity.
Some of the top focuses of the Levan Center have been trends, challenges, opportunities, and strategies of entrepreneurship within the space sector. In September, the center held its Second Annual South Florida Space Day, which was dedicated to these objectives.

NSU Alvin Sherman Library is excited to welcome South African conservationist, surfer, businessman, author, filmmaker, and three-time Guinness World Record holder Chris Bertish. Bertish will be talking about his book “All In! The Atlantic Standup Paddle Crossing -93 Days Alone at Sea” on Friday, Oct. 27. The talk details his historic 2017 accomplishment of being the first individual to Stand Up Paddle (SUP) across the Atlantic Ocean, an arduous solo trip that spanned from Morocco, Africa to Antigua in the Caribbean. Bertish will also recall his experiences at sea which include but are not limited to, being hunted by a great white shark, being towed by a giant squid, and capsizing multiple times. Attendees will be equal parts enthralled by Bertish’s harrowing journey, and uplifted by his positive attitude which shows that one can accomplish anything that they put their mind to.

Levan I NSU Broward Center of Innovation and John Wenzveen, the center’s executive director, were recently featured in Global Miami, a monthly print and digital publication designed to serve as an information resource and hub for Miami’s booming international business community. The center was characterized as “A Theme Park for Global Entrepreneurs.” Global Miami is a leading source of intelligence about the people, companies, trends, and opportunities as a trade nexus for the Americas and beyond.
Nova Southeastern University is pleased to announce the return of the annual health literacy fair, “A Day For Children” on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event showcases free and low-cost health and wellness services for children from birth to 16 years of age. Health care education and activities for vision, medical, speech, behavior, and dental health as well as physical and occupational therapy will be provided through NSU Health Centers.
