University School Student Publishes His First Book

Inspired by his experience in our Community Service and Leadership Seminar, USchool senior Tomer Shaked wrote and published a book titled “Game Over” that tells his story of overcoming an obsession with video games and dedicating his time to do good for others instead. Tomer is donating 100% of the book’s proceeds to the Jack & Jill Center, the place where his passion for helping others was awakened. He plans to continue volunteering and supporting the organization.

USchool Seniors Are Nominated For Silver Knight Awards

We are proud to announce the nominees for the 2022-23 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs that recognizes outstanding students for their community service and academic achievements. Congratulations to these seniors (pictured above) for demonstrating excellence in their respective categories!

All nominees from Miami-Dade and Broward County schools will appear on a designated day to be interviewed by a panel of independent judges who will select one Silver Knight and three Honorable Mentions in various categories. Winners will be revealed at the Silver Knight Awards ceremony in the spring.

USchool Speech/Debate Students Earn Top Recognitions

Congratulations to the students on our Speech and Debate team on their achievements at the Florida Blue Key Tournament held at the University of Florida! Known as one of the oldest and largest Florida tournaments, the team competed against 89 schools from across the country and earned the following outstanding results:

At Blue Key Round Robin (an invitation only, pre-tournament competition):

  • Charlotte Reitman placed 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • Ilan Arias & Maria Riofrio placed 3rd in Public Forum.

At Main Event:

  • Charlotte Reitman placed in the Top 10 of BOTH Extemporaneous Speaking and Informative Speaking.
  • Ilan Arias & Maria Riofrio placed in the Top 16 in Public Forum and earned their 2nd bid to the Tournament of Champions.
  • Nicholas Hamilton placed in the Top 20 of Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • Nicole Janoff placed 18th in Humorous Interpretation.
  • Logan Bratter & Samantha Hernandez placed in the Top 50 of Public Forum.

University School’s Annual Holiday Boutique, November 17

You’re invited to NSU University School’s Annual Holiday Boutique. The boutique will feature a curated selection of local vendors with an array of gifts for everyone in the family!

  • When: Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Where: Noel P. Brown Sports Center North, 3375 SW 75 Ave, Davie, FL

There will be food trucks from 10:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and a bake sale and snack shop open all day. The boutique is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the West Parking Garage behind the Lower School.

USchool Participates in Community Service Seminar

Students visited Broward Outreach Center and Feeding South Florida to sort and pack donations and serve lunch. Using the donations from our recent Socktober Drive, they created nearly 100 care packages for people in our community experiencing food and housing instability.

For the second day of the program, students volunteered on campus at the Lower School Scarecrow Breakfast and the Best Buddies Halloween Party to provide a fun morning for Lower School students and a lively afternoon for Special Olympics athletes.

Students developed leadership skills through team building, planning, communication, and leading events.

USchool Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

We are pleased to announce the 10 seniors who were named 2023 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Students!

Semifinalists are among 16,000 of the highest-scoring program entrants, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, who qualified for their exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They will have an opportunity to continue in the competition to attain finalist standing and qualify for winner recognition as well as National Merit Scholarships.

Commended Students are among 34,000 of the 50,000 PSAT/NMSQT high scorers to receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

USchool Student Receives Top Review Recognition

Haleigh Mish

We are proud to announce that junior Haleigh Mish, who is on our NSU University School Cappies team and serves as a theatre critic for shows at schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties, was selected as the TOP review for J.P. Taravella High School’s Radium Girls play.

University School Students Get Communications Experience

First grade students took a tour of the NSU Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts and explored the student-run campus newspaper, radio station, and TV station. They were thrilled to learn all about how news is shared and the essential role media plays in the educational and cultural life of the Nova Southeastern University community.
