NASA Administrator Tours Levan Center, Meets Students

On Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson visited Nova Southeastern University’s Davie Campus to see firsthand how the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation network is powering innovation in South Florida’s space ecosystem.

During the visit, Administrator Nelson met with NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II; John Wensveen, the Chief Innovation Officer at NSU and Executive Director of the Levan Center; Provost Ronald J. Chenail; Dr. Fred Lippman, NSU’s Chancellor of the Health Professions Division; and Ken Dawson-Scully, NSU’s Senior Vice President for the Division of Research and Economic Development. Administrator Nelson also spoke with and took questions from several NSU students.

During his talk, Nelson covered the vastness of space, its influence on his life, the possibility of life beyond our planet, and UFO sightings. He also did a sit-down interview with WTVJ-TV anchor Jackie Nespral.

Nelson was sworn in as the 14th NASA administrator on May 3, 2021, and has been tasked with carrying out the vision for NASA to demonstrate American leadership in air, space, and on Earth for the benefit of all humanity.

Some of the top focuses of the Levan Center have been trends, challenges, opportunities, and strategies of entrepreneurship within the space sector. In September, the center held its Second Annual South Florida Space Day, which was dedicated to these objectives.

Hall of Fame Celebrates Entrepreneurial Trailblazers

On Tuesday night, Oct. 10, 2023, under the lights of the Rick Case Arena, Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship honored three outstanding regional entrepreneurs at its 34th Annual Entrepreneur and Business Hall of Fame.

The Entrepreneur and Business Hall of Fame is a celebration of the remarkable achievements and contributions made by trailblazers in the business world. Over the years, this event has honored some of the most influential entrepreneurs and business leaders, including Guy Harvey, Rita Case, Mario Murgado, Terry Stiles, H. Wayne Huizenga, Carl A. DeSantis, and Beverly Raphael.

This year, the Entrepreneur and Business Hall of Fame recognized:

  • Antonio “Tony” Argiz, the South Florida managing partner at BDO USA, a premier accounting, consulting, financial advisory, and tax organization.
  • Leon Ellman, chairman of the JLE Group, a private equity investment and management consulting firm based in Fort Lauderdale.
  • S. Donald Sussman, a hedge fund investor with 30 years of experience and the founder and chief investment officer of the Paloma Fund, a billion-dollar-plus investment fund.

On hand to celebrate the new inductees were many former inductees, NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, NSU Provost Ronald J. Chenail, Board of Trustees Chair Charles L. Palmer, and Dean Andrew Rosman of the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship (HCBE).

During the event, Rosman acknowledged the recent passing of two of Hall of Famers: Carl A. DeSantis (July 1939-Aug. 2023) and Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. (March 1932-May 2023).

President Hanbury also held a moment of silence for those lost and struggling in the war-torn Middle East.

As the new hall of famers were captured in videos, greeted, and celebrated, 300 attendees – including several HCBE students – packed the audience.

Health Science Alum Shares HIV Work at Fast-Track Conference

Donrie Purcell, Ph.D., M.P.H., presented his HIV work at the Fast-Track Cities 2023 conference, which took place on Sept. 25-27, 2023, at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Center. Organized by the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC), in collaboration with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), his presentation was titled “Examining the Health Equity of Health Systems, Policy, and Data Gaps for People Living with HIV: The Health Equity Tracker.”

The presentation focused on his endeavor to address the significant gap HIV incidence, particularly in the southern United States, with a specific focus on Georgia and Louisiana. To tackle this challenge, he and colleagues developed a powerful tool known as the Health Equity Tracker (HET) at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute. What sets the HET apart is its ability to provide a more comprehensive array of metrics and insights compared to conventional choropleth maps.

HET is equipped with practical features, including comparison tools, enabling users to assess and contrast different locations and diseases. It also allows for customized reports tailored specifically for vulnerable communities, such as black women. Purcell says he firmly believes that making this data readily accessible to a wide audience, including patients, community organizers, physicians, and policymakers, will play a pivotal role in advancing health equity for individuals living with HIV across the United States.

Purcell holds a Ph.D. in Health Science from NSU, accompanied by an M.P.H in Epidemiology. Beyond his research endeavors, Purcell imparts his expertise in epidemiology as an adjunct assistant professor at Yeshiva University and Nebraska Methodist College. Additionally, he has taken on the responsibility of educating emerging healthcare leaders on the critical legal aspects of the healthcare domain.

Currently based at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, he actively contributes to advancing health equity through his involvement with the Health Equity Tracker. This multifaceted commitment exemplifies his dedication to underrepresented communities and resonates with NSU’s ethos of impactful scholarship and community advocacy.

Celebrate a NSU Community Halloween!

Sign up to dress-up in your favorite costume (or not), decorate a table, or the trunk of your car in a spooky fun theme, and hand out candy to our community neighbors. Tables, tablecloths, and a starter pack of candy will be provided. The event will be held at the Alvin Sherman Library North Circle on Oct. 31, from 5-7 p.m.

NSU Holds 2023 ASDA and ADEA Predental Weekend

NSU College of Dental Medicine held their 2023 American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Predental Weekend on Saturday Sept. 30, and Sunday Oct. 1. This year, about 92 students attended the event at NSU to experience an immersive weekend full of presentations, Q & A panels, and sim lab activities.

The weekend was kicked off with breakfast and welcome from Audrey Levitt Galka, D.D.S. Assistant Dean for Admissions, Student Affairs and Services.

Pre-dental participating students were able to :

  • Meet the admissions committee
  • Participate in mock interviews
  • Tour clinic, school, and sim-lab
  • Participate in hands-on sim-lab activities such as impressions

Health Care Sciences Faculty to Speak at Kenyan Conference

Kamilah Thomas-Purcell,  Ph.D., M.P.H., M.C.H.E.S, an associate professor at the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences in the Department of Health Sciences, will speak on behalf of the Cancer Stigma, Cervical Cancer Screening and HPV Vaccination during the plenary session.

The plenary session is titled: “Fostering Team Science and Global Oncology Research: Highlights from ongoing AC3 Collaborative Projects at the 8th Bi-annual African Caribbean Cancer Consortium Scientific and Training Conference.” The event is scheduled on Oct. 11-14, 2023, at the Pride Inn Paradise, Hotel, Shanzu, in Mombasa, Kenya.

Two-Day Entrepreneur Bootcamp to Give Start-Ups Leg Up

The Shepard Broad College of Law and the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic proudly present the 2023 Berger Entrepreneur Bootcamp: Innovating Successfully – Getting it Right! 

Building on the success of our three prior bootcamps, each with more than 200 in-person and online participants, our 2023 two-day bootcamp will immerse entrepreneurs in the skills and disciplines needed to successfully launch and grow a start-up business. The event will be held Friday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Alan B. Levan I NSU Broward Center of Innovation.

The 2023 bootcamp will feature a faculty of more than 30 diverse presenters from NSU’s Shepard Broad College of Law, NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, start-up founders, and other experienced professionals and participants in South Florida’s start-up ecosystem.  This two-day workshop is open to all NSU students, faculty, staff, and the general public. It will also be simulcast and recorded for those who want to attend the program online. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Admission to the program is free and includes course materials, breakfast, coffee, and water. On Friday, lunch will be provided at no charge through the generosity of our sponsors. On Saturday, lunch can be purchased for $20 when you register for the event.

NSU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15

National Hispanic American Heritage Month, also known as Hispanic Heritage Month, Latino Heritage Month, or Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month, is celebrated yearly from September 15 to October 15. At NSU, Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor the achievements and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors hailed from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. NSU enjoys its cultural diversity and is proud to be a leader in providing higher education to minorities and Hispanics. NSU is also number one in providing doctoral degrees and first professional degrees to Hispanics.

Many events feature music, dance, food, and guest lectures with notable experts across campus. These are rich cultural, learning, and family fun events being sponsored and organized by committed NSU community members across NSU. Halmos DCRS to Host Storytelling Festival in Conflict Resolution

The Conflict Resolution Community of Practice Working Group (CRCPWG) in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS) will host a Storytelling Festival in Conflict Resolution Zoom session on Friday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. during Residential Institute.

The event will be facilitated by Lizyvette Ramos, CRCPWG President and doctoral candidate in DCRS. Alexia Georgakopoulos, Ph.D., is the faculty director of CRCPWG. The featured speakers will be Linda Cole and David Noganosh and they will share their stories.

Linda Cole is a founding board member and former president of Mediators Beyond Borders. She also has served as a Special Master, an SEC receiver, a neutral evaluator, and a Special Magistrate and settlement Counsel. She has served internationally in Bulgaria, Jordan, Kosovo, and Sri Lanka as an ADR and Mediation Specialist with USAID and teaches internationally. Cole is the President and CEO of BRDGES Academy, an online educational platform for training dispute resolution practitioners.

David Noganosh

David Noganosh, whose spirit name Spotted Hawk, is a mediator, negotiator, and trainer from Anissinabek Nation, Wolf Clan. He is the Principal and Founder of Red Wolf Mediation, a company he founded in 2012. It is the only First Nations-owned and operated Mediation Firm in Ontario (Canada). He has actively facilitated violence prevention, conflict resolution, and anger management programs in Aboriginal and African Canadian communities for many years.
