Halmos Faculty Member Participates in Trinidad Conference

Cheryl Duckworth, Ph.D.

Cheryl Duckworth, Ph.D., faculty and director of the M.S. program and Graduate Certificates in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS), in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS), participated in the International Peace Research Association Conference held in Trinidad. As Editor in Chief of the Peace and Conflict Studies Journal, she participated in an Editor’s Panel that worked to improve access, equity and inclusion in academic publishing.  She also presented her research on the role of youth leadership in creating school cultures of peace.

Duckworth is the faculty facilitator for the Peace and Conflict Education Working Group in DCRS. She teaches qualitative research methods, peace education, foundations of conflict resolution, and History, Memory and Conflict Resolution.

College of Dental Medicine Holds Inaugural Research Day

NSU College of Dental Medicine’s inaugural Research Day took place on June 6 and 7, 2023, An annual event that showcased the outstanding research conducted by our graduate/postgraduate students and faculty. The objective of this event was to increase awareness of the exciting and diverse research and development activities taking place by many members of our community. 

There were 43 presenters who made this event a success by way of sharing their creative and scholarly activities.

Special thanks to the Organization Committee members Dr. Sibel Antonson, Mark Cayabyab, Alireza Heideri, and Dr. William Parker. We thank Dean Steven Kaltman for his vision and support to make this event a success.

There were nine sessions composed of oral and poster presentations, and eight CE credits were also provided at the conclusion of this two half-day event.

The keynote speaker was Professor Frederick Rueggeberg, DDS, MS, retired professor emeritus from the Department of Restorative Sciences at the Dental College of Georgia At Augusta University. His presentation title was “From Poster to Publication – Pathway Guidelines.”

The event concluded with the awards ceremony.  The recipients of the 2023 awards will also receive $1,500 travel grant to present their projects at a scientific meetings.

Audiology Department Attends Orlando Special Olympics Games

The Special Olympics of Florida Summer Games returned this May for the first time in three years. A large part of the State Games includes the Healthy Athlete program, which provides those athletes with free health screenings, treatment, and access to necessary medical devices and education. The 2023 Summer Games provided the athletes with over 3,500 screenings across multiple disciplines ranging from vision, fitness, dental, and hearing, just to name a few.

Healthy Hearing has been a part of the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete program for many years, and the NSU Department of Audiology, has played an active role in the Healthy Hearing program since 2010.  This year was no exception. Jackie Davie, Ph.D., NSU audiology professor, and South Florida regional coordinator for Healthy Hearing program helped organize and run the event. She was joined by eight NSU Doctor of Audiology program students and fellow faculty member, Karah Gottschalk, Au.D., Ph.D., NSU audiology assistant professor, who all volunteered for the 2023 Summer Games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports near Orlando. The NSU students were joined by fellow audiology and speech pathology graduate and undergraduate students from across the state. In total, nearly 40 students and ten audiologists helped with the event.

Five hundred and twenty-five athletes had their hearing screened over the two-day event. In addition, about 100 athletes received ear cleanings thanks to faculty member Gottschalk and several of our students, while over 25 were identified as having significant hearing loss that can be helped with the use of hearing aids. The athletes with significant hearing loss were provided with vouchers through the Starkey Cares program. This program provides the athletes with free hearing aids and follow-up care. One athlete returned to the NSU Audiology clinic shortly after the games, where she was fit with her own hearing aids thanks to the Starkey Cares program.

The Healthy Athletes program can only continue to provide help to the underserved athletes and individuals with intellectual disabilities with the help of medical professionals and students. In addition, students gain valuable experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. The reward of service not only benefits the athletes, but it also benefits the volunteers.

Conflict Resolution Studies Hosted Women’s Roundtable

Community Resolution Services (CRS), housed in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies (DCRS) in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS) hosted The Women’s Roundtable. The Women’s Roundtable features alumni and current students who discuss their career paths and share tips for success in their fields.

The featured speakers included Michaella Babrich, Family, Dependency, Appellate Mediator; Alicia Booker, Principal Ombuds for Baylor College of Medicine; Heizel Prince, Associate Director for Labor Relations, Stockton University; and Scottie Visser, Sr. Manager of Ethics for The Boeing Company. The moderator was Charlotte Santana.

Halmos Faculty Presents at International Studies Association Conference

Cheryl Duckworth, Ph.D., faculty and director of the M.S. program and Graduate Certificates in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies, in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center (HCAS), presented recent research on the role of schools in preventing violent extremism.  She presented on March 17th at the International Studies Association’s annual conference held in Montreal. The theme of the conference was “Real Struggles, High Stakes: Cooperation, Contention, and Creativity.”

Duckworth is the faculty facilitator for the Peace and Conflict Education Working Group in DCRS. She teaches qualitative research methods, foundations of conflict resolution, History, Memory and Conflict Resolution, and peace education.

NSU CREATE Launches Dental Photographic Exhibit

On April 20, 2023, The NSU Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation (CREATE) opened the photographic dental exhibition “Trauma-informed Care Through the Lens of Survivors,” at the NSU Alvin Sherman Library. The exhibition presented recent research findings through a visual display of photography.

CREATE was funded by NSU Quality of Life Faculty Community Based Applied Research Grant in July 2022 with the Nancy J. Cotterman Center as its Community partner. The research explored Human Trafficking Survivor’s experiences of the delivery of trauma-informed dental services.

This exciting event gathered over 60 members of the NSU community as well as advocates and leaders of the Anti-Trafficking movement. Heidi Schaeffer, philanthropist, and longtime advocate for trafficked victims generously gave $25,000 through the Heidi Schaeffer Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward to continue her support of CREATE in delivering services to survivors.

The photographic exhibit remains on display on the second floor of the Alvin Sherman Library through May 7, 2023. We hope you will take the time to visit the exhibition and learn about the impact of trauma-informed dental care for Survivors of Human Trafficking.

NSU Holds First Joint Commissioning and Pinning Ceremony

On Friday, April 28, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m., NSU held its first joint commissioning and pinning ceremony at NSU’s Armed Forces Service Plaza at Forman Field. The event was presented by NSU Military Affairs and included Army ROTC Cadets as well as Health Profession Scholarship Recipients.

Among the speakers at the event were Matthew Chenworth, the senior director of NSU Military Affairs; Major General Rafael Ribas, the deputy commander for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs, U.S. Southern Command; and Dr. George L. Hanbury II, NSU’s president and CEO.

Students Learn from Virtual Interprofessional Education Event

EXSC 4100 Adapted Physical Activity students from NSU’s Exercise and Sport Science major enjoyed a virtual interprofessional practice education (IPE) event on April 13, 2023.

The speech-language pathology students in SLP 6015, Clinical Processes worked with their instructor Jillian Yaw Ching, M.S., CCC-SLP, and associate professor, Tambi Braun, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, to review a clinical case and different diagnoses that SLPs treat.

The students worked in teams, and they also were able to share how they would create an intervention plan for functional activities for the hypothetical patient. Georgia Monique Mokha, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, CPSS, CSCS, professor, emphasized to all students the value of working as a team for future patients and clients.

Health & Career Fair Connects Students, Community

Nova Southeastern University’s Tampa Bay Regional Campus hosted a FREE Veterans Affairs Health & Career Fair on Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3400 Gulf to Bay Boulevard in Clearwater, Fla. The fair was open to veterans who reside in the Greater Tampa Bay Area to honor their service and commitment to our community.

The event offered veterans and community members, as well as military and non-military students, an opportunity to meet with local organizations who will showcase their employment opportunities and/or services. Several NSU health departments – such as our international dental program, physical therapy, and occupational therapy – were on hand to provide FREE health assessments or general healthcare information. The dental program was able to sign up one of the community members for a dental screening.

The event had more than 2,000 views on social media posts specifically on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook, collectively. Bryan Williams with CareerSource Pinellas had the event posted on its internal portal and an email blast was sent to 10,000 of their contacts who are affiliated with the organization.

All our local military bases were contacted as well. It was a real pleasure to have the MacDill Air Force Base Color Guard here to kick the event off. It was also nice to hear from our community organizations how they were pleased with the event and able to make great connections with our faculty, staff, and students.

Winners Honored at Holocaust Reflection Contest Ceremony

On Sunday, April 16, 2023, the ninth annual Holocaust Reflection Contest Award Ceremony was held at NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library.

The contest is conducted by the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center, which is housed in the library on the second floor.

The winners, as well as their teachers and schools, received cash awards as well as a full weekend experience that included tours of the center, one-on-one sessions with Holocaust survivors, and a celebratory dinner. The contest reaches out to more than 3,000 Florida schools – both public and private. There were almost 2,000 submissions this year.
